The poor things arrived to face a stressed out ‘Di’. I had been ‘through the mill’, so to speak (and nothing to do with Christmas), so they had a bad start, but it certainly did not phase these boys at all. They all have such a wonderful sense of humour, so it wasn’t long before they had me laughing. Once again, the evening was a happy one and great music ensued. ‘Calcutta (The Ladies of)’ was their starter for ten. Then ‘Tin Roof Blues’, with each of them performing fabulous solos. Obviously, they made a lovely job with ‘Chimes Blues’ – just a super one to enjoy dancing-wise too.

Mike (S) sang the next one, ‘Barefoot Boy’ (yes, another super voice). This band are a ‘sitting’ band. However, the front line all stood for finale for the next number (which as I have said before, is quite effective) and the number was ‘Bye Bye Blues’. After a small break, they returned to play a lovely Jimmy Dorsey number, ‘June Night’. They have made a CD entitled by this name. Kevin sang the next number, ‘Winin’ Boy’, likewise ‘Redwing’ and of course he also has a great jazz voice. The next number, well I thought he called it ‘Make Me a Parrot on the Floor’! I took ages on the internet, but couldn’t find any song near it!! However, I’m glad to say I suddenly thought “floor” and came up with “pallet” and yes, up came the song ‘Make Me A Pallet on the Floor’ – ha.

Certainly another unique number for us and one the dancers enjoyed. Unfortunately, there was a problem with someone with parking and I missed most of the last numbers (usually when all bands are really enjoying themselves and let rip), still can’t be helped. They will be back in the New Year, so make a note of the date (20^th February 2015).

GOLDEN EAGLE JAZZ BAND returned to play for us at Farnborough Jazz Club on Friday 1^st August 2014. The band is led by KEVIN SCOTT, who plays tenor banjo, with MIKE SCROXTON on trumpet, ALAN CRESSWELL on clarinet, ROY STOKES on trombone & vocals, MIKE BROAD on double bass and PETE JACKMAN on drums. They soon got into the swing and Kevin was once again on form with his jokes (I shan’t quote any, so he can repeat them at other gigs, if he so wants to). The dancing began with the first number, ‘Yes, Yes in Your Eyes’. Another one was sang by Mike (S), namely ‘Ting-a-Ling (The Bells’ll Ring)’ and was enjoyed by musicians and audience alike. Then that great number (recorded by Benny Goodman, plus many more) ‘The World is Waiting for the Sunrise’. My next jotting was a lovely easy to listen and also dance to, namely ‘Barefoot Boy’ with Mike (S) singing. We performed our line-dance to ‘Nobody’s Sweetheart Now’. The number was played at quite a fast tempo, so not quite sure what our audience thought of us, but we all enjoyed dancing it (hmmm). The next number ‘Walking with the King’, was sung by Roy and is a good ol’ trad favourite, so we all sung along too, band and audience alike. Then Mike (S) sang ‘Trombone Blues’ and then ‘Running Wild’ was played spectacularly by everyone. I danced, so couldn’t remark in my notes, but ticked tune big time (when I returned out of breath!) Last number to mention was ‘I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream’ Kevin sang and of course once again, we all joined in the usual place, completing another evening with everyone saying they enjoyed and loved the band.

They will be playing at ‘Ye Olde Whyte Lyon’ Pub at Locks Bottom, on the A21 (Kent) on 24^th August Bank Holiday Sunday (2014), 3.00-6.00pm. The garden has been beautifully refurbished and there will be a barbeque (including usual menu). There is some parking and Sainsbury’s car park at the rear is free on Sundays & Bank Holidays (walk thru slipway to pub). Bus routes from all directions (ask us if you need to know).

Before closing and just a mention, I thought Sunday’s World War One Remembrance Services showed such tremendous organisation by everyone and yes, I lit a candle and blew it out at 11.00pm, but it made me feel so sad. However, the Commonwealth Games were brilliant though, don’t you think. Well done Glasgow and well done the England Teams.

How about the GOLDEN EAGLE JAZZ BAND who were with us once again at our Farnborough Jazz Club on Friday 25^th April 2014?  I know I’m just going to upset you though, if you missed them!  Another fabulous evening of fun entertainment.  The audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as did the band.  Their leader, KEVIN SCOTT has a wonderful sense of humour all the time and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love a laugh, as well as appreciating talented musicians giving their all.  Kevin, who plays tenor banjo, had MIKE SCROXTON on trumpet, ALAN CRESSWELL on clarinet, ROY STOKES on trombone & vocals, MIKE BROAD on double bass and PETE JACKMAN on drums.  Honestly, this is another wonderfully popular band.  I mentioned last week that at one time, I had a quick peek into their own website, just to check name spellings [www.gejb.webeden.co.uk  – click on ‘Home-The Golden Eagle Jazz Band’].  I had forgotten we had posted a comment to the band.    Most likely adapted from our own website, but temporarily lost, so I asked you to check it out to remind yourselves of their very first evening here (when I get a moment, I’ll try to retrieve all lost newsletters from the past!).   As for this Friday, I now have to decide what numbers to mention and it won’t be easy, as I picked so many!  Well, they began the evening with ‘Red Wing’.  Kevin introduced it, saying it had some reference to a battle tune – about the time of the American Civil War.  Ken Colyar recorded it in 1955.  What a great start!  Then came a Paul Whiteman number ‘There’s Yes! Yes! In Your Eyes’ and was sung by Mike (another good jazz singer).  I always love to mention ‘Ciribiribin’, whenever it is played, because when looking it up a couple of years back, I got to make contact with the person who helped Jack Lawrence (co-composer) to write one of his book.  Jack was still writing to fans almost right up to his death aged 97yrs, brilliant.  Colin Dobson and his wife Jo and family came to see the band.  Colin being part of the trumpet section in the Billy Cotton Band Show (remember ‘Wakey, Wakey’ fame).  The boys played Billy Cotton’s signature tune ‘Somebody Stole My Gal’.  Mike sang it and of course we all sang along too.  Anther tune well worth a mention was ‘Lord, Lord, Lord’, because they played it a storm, really swinging.  I had written down ‘Brilliant’.  They are a sitting band, but the front line (including Kevin) stood up to play mid-stream – quite effective.   Alan was featured next with George Lewis’ signature tune ‘Burgundy Street’.  Alan was superb (accompanied by Mike and Kevin), I don’t think there was a sound from the audience, whilst he played, but huge applause ensued.  Another wonderful bit of fun was when they played ‘I Thank You Mr Moon’, because Mike sang the main part, with Kevin and Alan joining in doing their ‘Boswell Sisters’ act, definitely their party piece, ha.  My last number to mention is ‘I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream’.  What a great job Kevin did singing it too and of course once again the audience joined in.  Just a little added anecdote, before the audience arrived, I asked Kevin if he could give me a list of numbers they might be playing (so I could just put my remarks only).  When he gave it to me, I said I don’t suppose you will stick to it, but it will help me, to which he replied ‘How very dare you’ (Katherine Tate style)!  Mike chimed in with ‘I expect she wants to give it to George Tidiman’ – lovely humour.  Anyway, wherever this band plays, be sure to go along.  You certainly won’t regret it, they are such fun and very enthusiastic.  Their next date with us is Friday 1^st August 2014, please put a note in your diaries to come.

GOLDEN EAGLE JAZZ BAND returned to Farnborough on Friday, 11 October 2013.  The band consisted of leader KEVIN SCOTT (tenor banjo, MIKE SCROXTON (trumpet), ALAN CRESSWELL (clarinet), ROY STOKES (trombone/vocals), MIKE BROAD (double bass) and PETE JACKMAN (drums).  I mentioned last week that I peeked into their website, to check name spellings (www.gejb.webeden.co.uk  – click on ‘Home-The Golden Eagle Jazz Band’).  I had forgotten we posted a comment to the band.    Most likely adapted from our own website, but temporarily lost, so you must check it out to remind yourselves of their first evening here!  I did say ‘You came, you played and you conquered’.  Well I have to say they did it again.  There was so much dancing going on, with so many smiling faces.  Well done again boys.  Anyhow, here is a smattering of some of the tunes played.  The first number I jotted down was ‘Isle of Capri’, a lovely tango, yes of course dancing took place.  Our line-dancing was enjoyed with the next number called ‘I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream’ sung by Kevin.  The next number ‘In the Sweet By and By’ was sung by Roy.  It has such a happy beat, so once again plenty of dancing.  Dancing continued to take place with ‘One Sweet Letter from You’, which again was sung by Kevin.  That lovely number made famous by Harry James & Frank Sinatra, which again brought on the dancers, was ‘Ciriciribin’.  Next came ‘I Thank You Mr Moon’ which was sung by Kevin.  He is marvellous on the ‘mike’, introducing the tunes and telling short funny jokes.  However, I must tell you of the weirdest of things when he introduced the next number called ‘Smile, Darn you, Smile’.  Before they started playing it, Kevin mentioned W.C. Fields and told us one of his famous many quotes.  By sheer coincidence, I was working on the internet that morning, ‘hit’ on W.C. Fields somewhere, saw this actual quote and read it out to Keith.  W.C. Fields had a wicked sense of humour!  The quote was ‘Start every day off with a smile and get it over with.’ (Kevin emulated WCF’s voice too).  How weird is that, for Kevin to choose that particular quote, there must be billions of quotes over time, from all of history’s characters from all 4 corners of the world (dom dom dom dom)!  To continue … the next number was also sung by Kevin, called ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’.  Of course the audience naturally sang, plus again there was plenty of dancing going on.  I filmed their last two numbers, which were ’Collegiate’ and ‘Walking with the King’. ‘Collegiate was a new one on me.  I found out it was written back in the 1920’s by a couple of students.  They had not set up a copywrite, but had been playing it on campus with their own band ‘Jaffe’s Collegians’.  Fred Waring was booked to play at their Uni’s Annual Ball and was requested to play it.  When he heard of the students, he met up with them and set about sorting their copywrite.  Then recording the song with his own band ‘Pennsylvanians’ in 1925, making it a hit number, reaching No 3. Hopefully, our recordings will be good enough to put both numbers on the website, because they were great to hear ‘live’.
