P.S.  My computer (as many of you know) has been playing up!  One thing it has been  doing is popping irritating messages (to the side).  One continuously tells me (since I took on Windows 10), my scanner is no longer activated (it’s just popped up again this second!!!). Anyway, I looked into the control panel and fiddled and suddenly I found ‘it’ asking me to scan.  I quickly looked for something and came up with the following and as you can see, the SCANNER WORKED (even though the it’s popped up AGAIN just a second ago – hysterical isn’t it.  However, I thought you would enjoy the following:

‘Laurie Chescoe’s Reunion Band’, 22nd April 2016

We had so much fun with ‘LAURIE CHESCOE’S REUNION BAND’ here at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB, Kent on Friday, 22nd April 2016.  Drummer and leader, Laurie, was joined by ALLAN (‘Lord Arsenal’) BRADLEY on trumpet & vocals, JOHN LEE on reeds, MIKE POINTON on trombone, COLIN BRAY on piano, sax & xylophone, JIM DOUGLAS on banjo & guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON on bass guitar & bass ukulele.

I wished I could really write well enough to conjure up the true picture of how wonderful an evening these fabulous musicians give – such super entertainment.  However, I will try.  Their first number was a Frank Sinatra hit, called ‘Sunday’ and of course Allan sung it wonderfully.  Their next number had everyone up dancing with ‘S’ Wonderful’ (written by the Gershwin brothers’).  They followed on with such a super one, being ‘Fidgety Feet’ (John played clarinet).

Allen has such a marvellous voice, he and Mike on trombone showed the business with ‘Them Their Eyes’, to which we showed our appreciation by dancing our line-dance. He also sang one of his favourite numbers, ‘Oh Marie’, with the band echoing behind him.  Everyone entered the floor to dance away to ‘Old Rockin’ Chair’s Got Me’, which again Allan sang, with Mike joining him – just love Hoagy Carmichael’s stuff.

Their next number was to have Allan and Colin swop places, Allan on piano and Colin up front on soprano sax, plus John on tenor sax.  Wonderful stuff to ‘Slow Boat To China’.  John featured next – again playing tenor and with the backing of Jim, to ‘Swing 42’, oh he is brilliant on tenor (he used to play in Keith’s ‘KGB’ [Keith Grant Band]).

Next was Colin’s speciality – up he comes with his ironing board!!!! (Allan taking to the piano again) and they begin to play ‘I Can’t Give You Anything But Love’, what’s special, you ask?  Colin proceeds to play xylophone – with such magic too.  I personally think Colin is a genius.

Jim and Peter then played their special duet to ‘My Man’, quite super, holding everyone’s attention.  They played more tunes, but I made no more notes, as I was dancing (and drinking hmmm).

On closing, I have to mention Laurie, who is a wonderful drummer.  As you will see from these photos, how right I was, what a fabulous ol’ smiler he is, reminiscent of Gene Krupa (and Keith too aye).  Don’t you just love a smiler?  Thanks boys, another fantastic evening.

‘LAURIE CHESCOE’S REUNION BAND’ were here at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB, Kent on 4th September 2015Drummer and leader (smiling from ear to ear) Laurie, was joined by ALLAN (‘Lord Arsenal’) BRADLEY on trumpet & vocals, JOHN LEE on reeds, MIKE POINTON on trombone, COLIN BRAY on piano, JIM DOUGLAS on banjo & guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON on bass guitar & bass ukulele. These guys are all top of the range musicians and play brilliantly together.

They began with ‘When Somebody Thinks You’re Wonderful’, which was sang with plenty of feeling by Mike.  He also sang the next number, ‘Ja-Dah’ and although I didn’t make a note of it, I’m sure Pete would have played his bass ukulele.  Then Mike was ‘featured’ with the next one ‘Gee Baby Aint I Good To You’, just a brilliant trombonist and, of course, singer.  The dance floor took a bashing for the next one, with everybody up dancing.  The number was ‘All Of Me’ (good job we are on the ground floor!).

It was Colin’s turn to be featured next.  He began with one of his funny stories – this about waiters – oh, he is so straight-faced and dry-humoured.  When he tells one of his stories, you’ll find yourself crying with laughter.  The song he played was ‘When You’re Smiling’.  Such a lovely pianist and as you know, he is very talented at playing many other instruments too.

John took to the stage next, with his ‘feature’ and played Al Jolson’s ‘Avalon’. [tit-bit: Jolson was born in Lithuania, Russian Empire] John is just one great saxophonist and clarinetist – say no more!!!!! Keith and I just love him.  Jim came next with his ‘feature’ with a beautiful song – ‘Embraceable You’.  Of course, Jim is a master of the guitar.  Next came along a ‘Slow Boat To China’ with great singing from ‘Lord Arsenal’ (great trumpeter too) and he is brilliant fronting and announcing all their programmes.

The next tune is a fun one and the dance floor took a beating again with ‘Snake Rag’.  Throughout the evening, Laurie played fabulous drums with his wonderful face full of smiles, well he loves what he does ….. And what a band he put together to do it with.  Louis Armstrong’s ‘Strutting With Some Barbeque’ (written by wife Lilian) is such a great tune to end an evening with and they all played it with such gusto.  I for one, went home exhilarated.  Thanks boys, for learning to play when you were little.

Laurie Chescoe’s Reunion Band, Friday, 4th September 2015 A Slice of Cake

I’m leaving this newsletter published, because it’s my bit of fun………………………………………………….. “FRIDAY AT FARNBOROUGH” – Get ready to be thrilled by ‘LAURIE CHESCOE’S REUNION BAND’ here at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB, Kent on 4th September 2015. Drummer and leader, Laurie, returns with ALLAN (‘Lord Arsenal’) BRADLEY on trumpet & vocals, JOHN LEE on reeds, MIKE POINTON on trombone, COLIN BRAY on piano, JIM DOUGLAS on banjo & guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON on bass guitar & bass ukulele. We have been enjoying some pretty spectacular Fridays at our Farnborough Jazz Club and it has been because of some pretty wonderful ingredients. Those ingredients have been a little bit of this and a little more of that. Firstly, a huge spoonful of some super bands, who enjoy a huge spoonful of appreciation from our audience and our audience, who enjoy a spoonful of action on our dance floor. Sounds soppy, doesn’t it, but WHAT A CAKE! Of course a spoonful of our bar staff, making you all warm and welcome – I know that makes Keith feel especially welcome– ha. What I enjoy most of all (the icing on the cake), is the warm feeling I get, when everyone leaves with huge smiles on their faces – both band and audience alike.   Well, this Friday will be no exception, so hurry on over for a lovely ‘slice of cake’ to set you up for the week.

Of course, live Jazz is the main ingredient aye!

Laurie Chescoe’s Reunion Band, Friday, 3rd July 2015

Never a boring moment with ‘LAURIE CHESCOE’S REUNION BAND’, they always entertain us with some great choices of songs. Friday, 3rd July 2015 was no exception here at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB.  The musicians with drummer LAURIE, were ALLAN (‘Lord Arsenal’) BRADLEY on trumpet, piano & vocals, JOHN LEE on reeds,COLIN BRAY on piano & sax, JIM DOUGLAS on banjo & guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON on bass guitar & bass ukulele. JACKIE FREE was on trombone, who kindly stepped in at the last minute, for Mike Pointon.  I think it is the first time Jackie has played here and what a super player he is.  Aren’t you lucky to find a club like this, so you can always enjoy listening to the best of traditional jazz, plus enjoy dancing too.

They began with a pretty great up-tempo number, ‘Chicago (That Toddlin’ Town)’, with Jackie singing (sorry to gush, but he is also a marvellous singer), not forgetting Laurie’s wonderful drumming and with his infectious smile too.  I am usually busy at the start, but managed to have a dance straight off.  We knew we were in for some fun, for sure.  They featured Jackie in the next number, ‘Here’s That Rainy Day’, really lovely.

The mood changed for the next number, with Allan singing ‘I Scream, You Scream Ice Cream, jointly sung by audience and obviously such fun, that number.   What an ‘engine’ too.

Next, Colin left the piano and played alto sax to ‘Roses of Picardy’, with Allan taking over on piano (Oh the talent that is around!).  As per usual, Colin came out with a joke, in his usual extremely dry humoured wit.  No, I won’t tell you what the joke was – I’ll leave that to Colin, for his next audience. [Just a little added info for you, it was recorded for the soundtrack of ‘Downton Abbey].

John was featured next on tenor sax, with Pete playing bass Ukulele. They played Al Johnson’s ‘Avalon’.  What a fabulous sax player he is.  I must mention John again, when they played ‘Basin Street’ his clarinet was especially good.

‘(Fall In Love) Says My Heart’ was a number we danced our line-dance to, fabulous (a Fox Trot actually).  Then I recall Jim’s solo with ‘Body & Soul’.  He really is a star.  Well they all are, especially when Allan sang ‘Sunshine & Showers’.  What a lovely job he also makes of singing.

A friend of mine (Patricia) brought a lovely young couple, Jana and Krystof Jelinek to the club.  They were visiting her from the Czech Republic.  Jana is an interpreter for N.A.T.O. and Krystof is a music teacher.  He plays piano brilliantly, especially Straus, his favourite composer.  Colin kindly allowed the use of his piano, so Krystof was able to play some Straus for us, during our first interval.  His first piece was ‘Voices of Spring’ and the second was ‘Morning Papers’.  How beautifully he played and was such a delightful change.  Thank you Krystof.  I believe they are planning to make a return visit to England next year, so hopefully he will again give us a treat.

‘LAURIE CHESCOE’S REUNION BAND’ always do it right – entertain us, I mean and Friday, 20th March 2015 at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB was no exception. Drummer and leader, Laurie, with his fellow musicians, ALLAN (‘Lord Arsenal’) BRADLEY on trumpet, piano & vocals, JOHN LEE on reeds, DAVE HEWITT on trombone & Baritone Horn, JIM DOUGLAS on banjo & guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON on bass guitar & bass ukulele, I did advertised they can’t help but delight you all. Well, although you didn’t arrive by the coach-load, it was quite a good turnout. Unfortunately COLIN BRAY was not with us – hurry up and get well Colin, so you can join us on the next Reunion.

I will begin this newsletter with the mention of Dave’s Baritone Horn, which he played when they did ‘Riverboat Shuffle’ (Allan mentioned Dave’s nickname for the horn, being his “valued bed pan!” hmmm. I can assure you it doesn’t sound like one – ha). They were all playing with such brilliance (his Lordship with muted trumpet and John on clarinet). What a team. Dave then began with a super intro (again on b.horn) to the next number ‘Sleepy Time Gal’. John had changed to Tenor sax and Allan sang. We were being spoilt for sure and to follow came ‘Taps Miller’, with John still on tenor, but with Dave on trombone this time.

The next number I wish to mention was John’s Special. I don’t have to tell you how special John is, it goes without saying, but I must mention Laurie gave his all. Yes, what a brilliant drum solo. Keith was standing with his mouth agape. The number was ‘Back Home in Indiana’ – wonderful. They played one more number before the break, ‘Oh Marie’ and Allan sang. We audience got up and enjoyed doing a line-dance. When they returned from their break, they all sang ‘Bourbon Street Parade’ led by Allan and what a great rendition from all of them (including us audience of course). I know I have said it before, but must emphasise what a lovely voice Allan has, which shows when he sings ‘I Thank You Mr Moon’, need I say more. It was Jim Douglas who came up next with his special, ‘God Bless the Child’, with Pete backing him. What a performance. The bands last number to end the evening was sung by Allan (Bing Crosby’s hit) ‘Pennies from Heaven’. This song was a big hit with so many top stars, including Louis Armstrong and a great number to end the evening with. Sorry to be so repetitive, but another happy ending to a lovely evening, leaving you wanting for more.

You have to agree, ‘live’ jazz is fun.

Laurie Chescoe’s Reunion Band, Friday, 14th November 2014

‘LAURIE CHESCOE’S REUNION BAND’ certainly did excite us BIG TIME, on Friday, 14th November 2014 at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB.

Laurie Chescoe's Reunion Band at Farnborough Jazz Club, Kent, UK on 14th November 2014. With Laurie (drm, ALAN (‘Lord Arsenal’) BRADLEY (trp/p/voc), JOHN LEE (rds), MIKE POINTON (trb/voc), COLIN BRAY (p/sop-sax/xylo), JIM DOUGLAS (bj/gtr) & PETER SKIVINGTON (b-gtr/b-uke). Photo by Mike Witt.

Drummer and leader, Laurie had again reunited those fantastic musicians, ALLAN (‘Lord Arsenal’) BRADLEY on trumpet, piano & vocals, JOHN LEE on reeds, MIKE POINTON on trombone & vocals, COLIN BRAY on piano, curly soprano sax, ironing board & xylophone, JIM DOUGLAS on banjo & guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON on bass guitar & bass ukulele. Oh you bet, another fun evening is an understatement, because they were just. Everyone just gushed with telling Keith and I, just how much they loved the evening. They began appropriately for this week, dedicating their first number ‘Rosetta’ to the Rosetta Space Mission (super to think of doing it (see below). Next came a ‘Fats’ Waller number ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’, sung by Mike. I remember Allan’s solo, he interjected with a snippet of two other songs, a Hoagy one – ‘ Two Sleepy People’, plus a little of Rogers and Hart’s tune from the 1940’s show ‘Pal Joey’ – ‘Bewitched Bother and Bewildered’, what a star he is.

Talking of stars, one of our favourite tenor sax players, John was featured with Django Reinhardt’s ‘Swing 42’.  He played it in his smooth Ben Webster style –  Just so beautifully.

Then we come to Colin! Oh what a man. He is fabulous. He came up to the front with his soprano sax and played ‘Avalon’ (with Allan on piano). He not only played it fantastically, he performed it the same, with legs akimbo (see photo) and even at one point, with one arm behind his back!!!! So entertaining (including his intro’ – sort of Jack Benny style).   Follow that, they did, dedicating their next number to one of our regular visitors ‘Brown Owl Pete’, with ‘I’m Nobody’s Baby’. Pete was a long-time roadie with the likes of Max Collie and including Rod Mason, whenever he was in England.  Next on my list was ‘Tishomingo Blues’, which was sung by Mike – I jotted down ‘a mean trumpet from Allan’.

Well next came another special …. Colin with an ironing board! No, not to play, to lean on. He produced a xylophone and I won’t tell you what he said, because I certainly don’t want to spoil his other gigs, save to say he is so funny. Not his playing though, he played a storm with ‘I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, Baby’.

But still the band continued to excite us with the next number ‘Hindustan’, especially with Laurie’s brilliant drum solo intro, closely followed by Allan’s also brilliant trumpet intro and everyone joined in superbly. Another number to mention was that lovely ‘Hoagie’ number, ‘Two Sleepy People’, which Mike sang [was Allan just practicing earlier] hey I’m so sorry Ron, sitting next to you and accompanying Mike, I just couldn’t help myself (singing, I mean)!

The number ‘God Bless the Child’ was a feature for Jim on guitar next, with Peter backing him. Jim is famous for his guitar playing, although he is just as marvellous on banjo. They played several songs after that, but I was too busy dancing and took no more notes. I just want to say the band enjoyed themselves as well, so played after time with one more number. I know, you think I’m also gushing too much, but it is all true.

Keep coming and we will bring you more magic.

Diane and Keith

P.S. Just to finish off, a few weeks ago, I mentioned our friend, Leslie Baguley.  Just to update you, I asked for relatives to get in touch and Leslie’s son, Craig did. He and his wife (plus two friends) came to Laurie’s evening. So these newsletters are read, thank goodness (that’s a note to myself – ha).

Laurie Chescoe’s Reunion Band, Friday, 11th July 2014

The great ‘LAURIE CHESCOE’S REUNION BAND’ delighted our audience (again) on Friday, 11th July 2014 at the FARNBOROUGH JAZZ CLUB. Drummer Laurie reunited musicians ALLAN (‘Lord Arsenal’) BRADLEY on trumpet, piano & vocals, JOHN LEE on reeds, ROY WILLIAMS on trombone, HUGH CROZIER on piano & vocals, JIM DOUGLAS on banjo, guitar and PETER SKIVINGTON on bass guitar/bass ukulele. The first number I noted down was ‘Alone Together’, although I remember it was great, I didn’t have time to make extra notes (either busy on ‘the door’, or enjoying a dance). The next number, I recall to begin with, we weren’t sure what to expect. It featuring Hugh with ‘Blaze Away’. However, as it commenced, I recalled that it just happened to be the ‘Saturday morning pictures’ signature song sang as ‘Members of the ABC’ – remember? We all double-time clapped and one audient (Don) emulated a bit from the two Ronnies’ comedy routine. Such a happy bit of simple fun. The next number brought out our line dancers to the floor with ‘As Long As I Live’. (It was written by Arlon and Koel’s for the last show at Cotton Club Parade in 1934 and sung by Lena Horne aged 16!). ‘Young & Healthy’ featured Hugh and Laurie making a great duet (another one written for the film ‘42nd Street’ in which Dick Powell sang). John Lee was featured next with ‘Black and Blue’ and can he play that sax – simply magic.   What a wonderful treat the next number gave us, because it featured Roy Williams this time, playing ’Body and Soul’ (it gives one goose pimples). Now the following number was ‘Carioca’ and takes me back to when I was about 14yrs old. I saw the film it was in – ctrl+click on www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVpFBoj-zeY (thanks Shaun Coruble).  I just loved the dancing and fell in love with the song, so much so, I placed a special order for the record from Dobells of Charing X Rd, London.   ‘I Thank You Mr Moon’ sung by ‘his Lordship’, is one of the band’s favourite and we certainly enjoy them playing it. The last number was ‘China Boy’ and everyone left with big smiles on their faces.

Update:  Sunday lunchtime T.V. 27th July – two weeks after this gig, I watched ‘Flying Down To Rio’! The film that had the ‘Carioca’ dance!!!!!! Co-incidence?  Or did Laurie know the film was going to be aired?

Cheers,

Diane and Keith

Laurie Chescoe’s Reunion Jazz Band, Friday, 21st March 2014

The famous ‘LAURIE CHESCOE’S REUNION BAND’ entertained us big time last Friday, 21st March 2014 here at the Farnborough Jazz Club.  Drummer Laurie (as usual grinning from ear to ear – just like Gene Krupa) had his reunion musicians, ALLAN (‘Lord Arsenal’) BRADLEY on trumpet, piano & vocals, JOHN LEE on reeds, DAVE HEWITT on trombone &baritone horn, COLIN BRAY on piano & vibes JIM DOUGLAS on banjo, guitar (&drums!) and PETER SKIVINGTON on bass guitar.  They are always very entertaining, being such a talented bunch.  I mentioned last week, I would be in a celebratory mood, as it was my wedding anniversary and would have been 50th, had Len lived.  I said I was so lucky to have an equally super partner with Keith.  I knew he didn’t mind me mentioning this, but my daughter and son-in-law worried he wouldn’t like it.  However, he said he could celebrate too, with an extra six large gins! Ha.  The evening was certainly full of fabulous numbers.  Once again, I had an extremely hard job choosing what tunes to mention, as they were all brilliant!  So first of all, I chose numbers that featured someone, then where I put an asterisks against others.  Their first number of the evening was ‘Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella’ (a Bing Crosby hit), which was a good one to start with.  Next to mention was a Boswell Sisters’ hit called ‘Moonglow’, such a melodic number (with Dave on baritone horn).  Dave featured in the next number, playing both trombone and baritone horn to ‘I Cover the Waterfront’, made famous by Louis Armstrong.  Everyone played fabulously.  Then I noted ‘Oh! Marie’ (a Louis Prima hit) and was sung by Allan.  Not only does Allan have a great voice, but he is great on the mike, introducing the numbers and entertaining us with jokes too.  He also sang the next number I chose, ‘Nobody Loves You When you’re Down and Out’.  Obviously Allan made jokes about the name, plus we all joined in with the singing (agreeing with his sentiments too, ha).  The next number was called ‘Taps Miller’, which was written as a tribute to ‘Taps’ Miller, that fantastic tap dancer of the 40’s (he could play trumpet and dance at the same time!)  It was written for the Count Basie Band and was certainly a good one for dancing to (although there was plenty of dancing going on all evening!)  Next came a feature of that extremely talented musician, Colin.  He swapped places with Allan (on piano) and took to playing vibes with ‘I’m Confessing That I Love You’, (another Louis hit- also Billie Holiday).  What brilliance, they are all so talented (Jim took to the drums too).  Colin received a huge response, with screams of “More”!  I was enjoying it so much, I failed to write the numbers down, but I can remember the sight of Colin playing this fast number, with his legs akimbo (again) whilst playing!  What a star.  ‘I Thank You, Mr Moon’ another lovely Boswell Sisters hit song, came next, with Allan singing.  John followed on with a feature and he played ‘Swing 42’ on tenor sax.  Oh! I just love him playing sax, he has such a feel for it.  Then came Jim’s feature with ‘Manoir De Mes Reves (popularly known as ‘Django’s Castle)’.  This tune was written by both Django Reinhardt and his brother Joseph.  [Jim has written a book called ‘Tunes, Tours and Travel-it is’.  It’s about eighteen years of facts, faces and fun with the Alex Welsh Band, available through Amazon for $13.50, or email us for Jim’s contact details, if you live in England].  It wasn’t their last number of the evening, but I had better not mention any more of Laurie’s repertoire, or he won’t know what else to play on his next date here, although I certainly wouldn’t mind them all being played again!  They are next with us on 11 July, 2014.

Cheers.
